Runway Construction on a Budget

Most clubs believe that they must have a large membership in order to have a first-rate runway for their members. The Charleston (IL) Stone Flyers Club, formed in 1980 by well-known Pattern flier Larry Drake, currently has 11 members. In fact, there are just eight official members flying at our club, and only five regular users of the field. The flying site is secured with a long-term lease on the property at a very low cost from Jerry and John Tarble, the owners of a long-since-vacated gravel pit. I can hear it already: "I bet your dues are outrageous!" Well, if 20 bucks a year is outrageous, I guess you're right.
