THE BOY looked up sharply as he sensed a distant rhythmic rumble. It swelled to a roar as a squadron of U.S. Army Air Force bombers cruised across the sky. He knew instantly that they were Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses. Shading his eyes against the sun, he watched the planes until they disappeared beyond the horizon. That evening, the boy checked the comics for the aviation adventures of Smilin' Jack. Then he listened to his favorite radio program, Sky King, while building his latest Free Flight model, an Ohlsson .23-powered Megow Ranger.
