THE SALEM R/C Pilots Association in
Oregon held its Polar Bear fly-in on January
1, 2011. Dave Dibble reported on the event.
“This is the best one we have ever had
and it was worth all the effort we put into it.
Thanks to all 33 pilots who registered and
the one or two who we missed.
“Thanks to Joanne Dibble for all her help
and making sure I got it all done. Ron Terry
is always there when I need him, especially
during setup and cleanup.
“Pete Melin helped set up the event and
took pictures and video clips. He was the
greatest help selling the Polar Bear
sweatshirts. Thanks to Matt and Mary Myatt
for bringing marshmallows and sticks to
roast them on. Glen Malone handled the fire
pit in which we roasted the marshmallows
on and warmed ourselves. Bob Ramseyer
and Wayne Austin also brought out their
propane heaters.
“Former club president Wayne Austin
took care of the registration duties and sold
Polar Bear patches. Thanks to Alan Lasneski
for his help cleaning up and registration
duties. Dan Anderson made sure we had
water and helped in other areas. John Stroup
took photos and brought the checkbook.
Thanks to anyone I missed and to all who
came to support our club’s function.
“The first one in the air was Richard
Stutrud. The second one in the air was Pete
Melin followed by Glen Malone. These men
each received the new ‘Chili Mugs’ for
showing us how it is done.
“There was no shortage of willing pilots
braving the cold and slightly windy day. We
got to see old and new pilots during this
outing. I only wish I had had the time to
visit with everyone.
“This is a new fact to put in the books.
Last year we had two or three electric
airplanes. This year electrics were 75% of
all airplanes that flew. We have room for the
helicopter guys too. Maybe next year they
will join us.
“We went through three large crockpots
of homemade chili with all the fixings—
cheese, onions, chips, and crackers. The
almond rock candy was a big hit.”
