THIS YEAR, the Academy of Model
Aeronautics celebrates its 75th anniversary.
July 14-17 will be three days of festivities
at the International Aeromodeling Center in
Muncie, Indiana.
Clubs throughout the country are also
reaching notable milestones. One of those,
the Johnstown RC Club of Johnstown,
Pennsylvania, is celebrating its 50th
anniversary.
Roger Luther, club newsletter editor, has
provided some insight into this group.
“We were founded in 1962, and there are
still three charter members who have been
with us the whole time: Caleb Butler, Jim
Patterson, and Ken Reesey. Our club was
formed in 1962 and we have earned the
Leader Club award for 15 years plus.
“We always have the three ‘big’ events
each year: the January Indoor Fly-In, our
annual March Club Banquet, and of course
the annual Mall Show in early May.
“Johnstown RC has a hot dog cookout
every Sunday evening during the flying
months from April through October, and then
the last Sunday of each of those months we
invite the families and guests to come too.
That dinner is always special and the ladies
bring a favorite dish to add to the hot dogs.
“Our officers have remained the same
ones for the past 10 years or so: Sam
Kaplitz, president; Paul Yuhas, secretary;
Ken Reesey, vice president; and Ken
Shilling, treasurer.
“We lease our flying field from the
Berwind White Coal Company for $350 a
year. We have a local man do the mowing
and pay him. He does a wonderful job. His
name is Don Hoffman, and he really takes
pride in our field. He uses a Kabota tractor
with a belly mower and keeps it cut very
close for easy rolling with the smallest of
wheels.
“We meet the first Tuesday of each
month, and usually have 18-25 members
attend. Our meetings are held at the
Richland Township Municipal Building.

and Web site for the past four years now.”

Club member of the month, Jim Patterson,

On January 1, 2011, the Farview RC Flyers
held its annual Polar Bear Fly. Roughly 24
pilots braved the elements to fly everything
from foamies and ultralights to 3-D and
WW I scale aircraft. Even a ducted fan or
two and a helicopter joined in the fun.
Kim Berkheiser scored the first crash of
the season with his electric Mustang while
the crowd enjoyed hot dogs and chili from
the kitchen of Lee Buskirk. Snoopy (Ken
Karpinski) and the Red Baron (Billy
Jameson) engaged in a mock dogfight and
did some close formation flying.
The day was perfect with beautiful
weather, fun flying, and great fellowship.
