HAPPY NEW YEAR and welcome to
2010!
This is the time of year for club officers
to look into the programs that AMA has
available such as Take off And Grow
(TAG), Flying Site Grants, etc. If your club
participates in a regional chapter you are
already familiar with this.
New York City opened its first municipal
airport in May 1931 at Floyd Bennett Field,
where Brooklyn meets Jamaica Bay. A
crowd of thousands watched fighter
airplanes and an armada of bombers thunder
past.
Fast-forward 78 years and the full-scale,
fixed-wing activity no longer takes place
here but the Pennsylvania Avenue Radio
Control Society (PARCS) keeps aircraft
flying off of Floyd Bennett’s full-scale
concrete runway.
The PARCS held its annual Big Apple
Jet Rally June 26-28, 2009. This is the
largest jet rally in District II and this year
was no exception. Some of the biggest and
finest-quality jets fly at this event.
Event CD Sal Faraj and his crew did a
great job managing the flightline and
providing one of the safest and most
interesting district events of 2009. If you are
serious about turbine hardware and
outstanding flying, don’t miss the 2010 Big
Apple Jet Rally. You will be glad you went
June 27, 2009, saw the Sixth Annual Norm
Hils Memorial Electric Fly-In take place at
Colts Neck Dorbrook Park, home of The
Jersey Coast Sport Flyers. This Gold Level
Leader Club, located in Monmouth County,
New Jersey, has one of the first electric
events of the year. It was well planned and
well attended. Approximately 25 pilots flew
and many more spectators watched at this
well-organized event. Rob Kallok gave the
pilots instructions and the fun didn’t stop all
day.
Associate Vice President Ray Juschkus sent
a report of an unusual event. The idea of a
Silent Electric Flyers of Long Island
(SEFLI) Club Night Fun-Fly was the
brainchild of none other than Tom Hunt.
Was the event successful? More than 40
people came out for this inaugural event!
Ray went on to say, “The night fly was
held at our field in Calverton on August 8,
2009. Members were told to be there by 6
p.m. They were asked to bring wives and
friends. Pizza was served to all who attended.
While the members flew well into the night,
the women were treated to a movie on a big
screen. We all had a great time!”
This kind of unique club activity helps
maintain a high level of club interest and
involvement.
Until next month, Keep ’em Three in the
Green.
