"A Pattern contest was held June 8 and 9, 2002, in Monroeville NJ by the South Jersey Golden Eagles RC Club (also known as Clayton RC Club). Contest Directors George Asteris and Jay Gerber put on a very successful contest with 28 contestants from NSRCA (National Society of Radio Controlled Aerobatics) Districts I and II participating. "NSRCA president and club member. Eric Henderson, held a judge's seminar June 7 to help pilots prepare for the weekend's contest. The weather could not have been better with clear skies and light breezes. "An all-you-can-cat lunch was available Saturday, with 'chef Don Lamkin working the grill. A cookout was provided at George's house for supper after flying ended on Saturday. No one went home hungry! Clayton RC Club president and Contest Director George Asteris. "The flying was very good in all classes, with first, second, and third places up for grabs right into the last round. Prizes were donated by a number of manufacturers. Winners in their respective classes were: Sportsman, Art Riegal; Intermediate, Todd Siegal; Advanced, Ken Valcz; Masters, Raoul Querze; and FAI, Don Szcur." Masters winner Raoul Querze with his George Asteris-designed Omen. June 1, 2002, Associate Vice President (AVP) Gary Fitch visited the Ithaca Radio Control Society (IRCS) Open House, an annual event where fliers and public are invited to share this beautiful site, good food, and of course RC flying. Gary sent in the following report. "This is just one of several events the IRCS promotes in the community. They also have a mall show and introductory club events. Yes, IRCS is a Gold Leader Club. "This day brought sunshine and a slight 30 mph breeze. That didn't stop the Open House attendees from taking to the air. More than 30 aircraft graced the ground and sky. Terry Wildey of the IRCS club logged the most flights and the most spectacular landing, a dead-stick into a poplar tree while attempting to make the field. "The wind was so strong it actually blew the airplane out of the tree to within reach of the ground. Even IMAA (International Miniature Aircraft Association) assistant director Vince Quartararo showed his big 40% Extra with a DA-150, and his 30% Giles, and did an admirable job flying his .40-powered Armadillo. Yes, even IMAA folks fly the little ones! "Attending to the kitchen duties were IRCS club president Carl Smith manning the grill, and Cornel Lamey serving the hotdogs and hamburgers. Of course, 83-year-old Arlo English was the unofficial IRCS welcoming committee and had a smile and a good word for everybody. In spite of the winds, everyone had a terrific time." IRCS members Cornel Lamey and Arlo English. PLANS FOR the District II Fly-in arc coming along nicely. Hopefully, by the time you read this, everything will be in place for a great weekend of modeling activities hosted by the Syracuse Thunderbirds Aero Radio Society (STARS) at their field in Phoenix NY. We have sent flyers with directions to all clubs in District II, and additional information can be found on the District II Web site at http://www.amadistrictii.org
